Teachers with guns only benefits NRA

-

Picture this: a school board considering two applicants. One skilled with guns and an average academic record; the other with outstanding academics but no experience with firearms. Hiring teachers is a tough job under normal circumstances. But if the NRA has its way it will become even tougher.’

What parent wouldn’t choose her child’s safety over her learning science? Safety is always first. But the school-hired shooters may never be needed while knowledge, being the purpose of schools, is always needed if students and our country are to succeed.

School districts have come up with some good ideas. Panic buttons on teachers’ desks (the door automatically locked, the office notified, police alerted) and smoke machines set off in hallways (but would a shooter with an automatic weapon just begin shooting wildly?).

Wouldn’t outlawing entirely military weapons for civilian sale be a good idea in addition to panic buttons and smoke machines? Hunting, target shooting, and home protection can all be accomplished without weapons designed to tear enemies to shreds on a battlefield.

The NRA which began as a club for gun owners has morphed into a powerful and polished manufacturers’ lobby whose purpose is to buy legislation from money-hungry legislators that will increase the market for more guns. They are very good at their job.

So we all know which of the applicants in the above example would get their approval. Ka-ching.
