Living in Utopia

The Oneida Community was one of many utopian experiments of the 19th century, active from 18481880. Primarily a religious community, its members lived as one family sharing everything and believed they were creating heaven on earth. But it was also a very successful economic venture.

What is it like to live in a Utopian or intentional community? Lynne Barnes, poet and former member of the Kerista Community in the HaightAsbury neighborhood of San Francisco, will join our discussion on the experience of communal living. You are invited to join the discussion with your experiences, ideas and insights on April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Mansion House. The program is free to members, $7 for non-members and $3 for students. Advance registration is not required.

The Oneida Community Mansion House was once home to the 19th century utopian Oneida Community (1848-1880). Today, the building houses a museum with permanent and changing exhibits about the community, overnight lodging, and banquet and meeting space. The Mansion House is a National Historic Landmark and history museum chartered by the New York State Department of Education. It is open for visitors Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Guided tours are provided regularly April through November and by appointment only December through March.

Skate park closed

Sherrill Skate Park, located in the CAC parking lot on East Hamilton Avenue, will be closed for the 2018 season. While the city has owned the equipment for years, the modular steel park is nearly 20 years old and is beyond repair and in its condition creates a hazard for the users.

Though the park is closing until further notice, the city has formally submitted a request for funding to Assemblyman William Magee’s office. The city is also exploring additional opportunities to help fund the park.

City Manager Brandon Lovett said the city is supportive of “action sports” like skate boarding, BMX biking, in-line skating and more.

“The city is hopeful it will receive the necessary assistance in rebuilding a new Action Park that will last another 20 years and provide a safe and enjoyable space for its users,” he said.

Updates on the progress of funding a new park will be provided by the city website, the city’s Facebook page and at the May 16 Citywide Recreation Meeting at the CAC. The cost to replace the existing park equipment is estimated to be $50,000$60,000.

If there are any questions or comments please contact Lovett at blovett@sherrillny.org.
