America must triumph over Trump

-

On St. Patrick’s Day, after what some are calling the firing of Andrew McCabe the “Friday night slaughter,” John O. Brennan, former director of the CIA, addressed the president in a tweet:

“When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history. You may scapegoat Andrew McCabe but you will not destroy America. America will triumph over you.”

How fitting. St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland; now one of Ireland’s sons foresees the fate of a president whose behavior has disgusted the world.

In the 15 days from St. Patrick’s Day to Easter, Trump’s Cabinet, presented to us last year as the best in history, has continued to crumble; Robert Mueller continues to uncover Trump’s business activities in Russia; and the world remains on edge regarding tariff edicts and what is going on in the Korean peninsula.

But nothing captures Trump’s personality and concerns more than the contrast between his total silence on the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain, and his immediate and enthusiastic call to Roseanne Barr to congratulate her on her new show. He has no hope of ever understanding our complicated history with Russia, but the simplicity and immediacy of TV ratings thrill him.

Yet he thinks his under40-percent base will propel him to another term. He has to or he couldn’t make it through the night. With him as president our country is in danger of not making it through the decade.

I pray for the sake of my grandchildren that Brennan’s prediction of America’s ultimate triumph over this unprecedented craziness proves to be true.
