Grave markers honor veterans

-

As we approach Memorial Day, volunteers from Munnsville American Legion Post 54 will be placing flags on the graves of our veterans in the local cemeteries.

Usually this is done by members of our Legion family and in our case our local Boy Scout troop. We strive hard to recognize every veteran, but please keep in mind that some of these graves go back hundreds of years, and are not easy to find. If we overlook a grave, please call your local Legion and let them know who the grave is for and where it is located to the best of your ability. If you aren’t sure which Legion to call, call your local one, they will probably have an idea of who to contact. And again, please be kind, the overlook was not intentional or out of disrespect.

We have been working at placing veteran flag holders at all of them but the markers are not inexpensive; bronze run over $40 and even the plastic ones are $9.95. Families are welcome to purchase one of these markers for their family member; your local Legion can help you. If you would like to make a donation to a Legion to help purchase more, send a check made out to American Legion and write Veteran Grave Marker purchase in the memo area. It would be helpful to write a note explaining what your intention is too.

Please remember that Memorial Day is about more than just the parade. Memorial Day is about remembering our deceased veterans. After most parades there is a ceremony that honors them, please consider taking the time to attend and pay your respects to these heroes, they laid their lives on the line for all of us. And when you see the red poppies being offered, these are NOT “for sale” but rather for a voluntary donation that is used to assist our living veterans.

For God & Country, Carl Griffith, Judge Advocate/

Scouting Chairman, Munnsville American Legion
