Bridgeport Library

Sullivan Free Library in Bridgeport will hold the following events during May:

May 15 at 7 p.m., Library Board meeting.

May 17 at 1 p.m., Knitting (bring your own project).

May 22 at 7 p.m., Attic Salt Book Group. May 17, 24 and 31 at 10 a.m., Story Time.

Canastota Library events

The Canastota Central School District will be displaying some of the winning artwork from their District Wide Art Show at the Canastota Public Library this year. The Lawson Community Room will be used to display the winning entries created by the talented students of the school district. Stop by, anytime the library is open, to browse this eclectic collection.

Beginning on May 15 and throughout the entire week, The Canastota Seed Exchange will be holding its annual Seedling and Plant Exchange. Bring your tubers, plants, seedlings, divisions, plants or bulbs to exchange and/or share with others. The Plant Exchange will be located near the Main Entrance of the library.

On Saturday, May 19, come to the library at 1 p.m. and learn how to play the ukulele. Ukulele

classes are taught by Deb Guarneiri, an experience­d piano and ukulele teacher. Beginner Ukulele classes start at 1 p.m., followed by sessions singing Hawaiian songs and the experience of playing ukuleles in a group. These lessons are free with Guarneiri volunteeri­ng her services. Signups are preferred. There are some ukuleles that may be borrowed for lessons.

On Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. the Canastota Public Library will host a special interview with WWII Veteran Boyd Paquin. Paquin was a bombardier in the Eight Air Force 2490th Bomber Group, 851st Squadron. He flew 10 missions in a B-24 before flying 20 missions in a B-17. He completed his 30th mission in late 1944 and then was transferre­d to Texas to train Brazilian cadets. He returned home, attended Colgate University and then taught in local school districts until 1967. There is no charge for this event. For more informatio­n please call (315) 366-2453.

Are you nearing retirement age? On Thursday, May 24 at 6 p.m., John Kalil, President of Retirement Solutions, LLC will offer a Social Security Informatio­n Session at the library. This exciting program is designed to help pre-retirees (age 55 and older) make informed retirement decisions. The session is open to anyone who might be interested.

The Book Chat Group has selected “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf as the discussion book for the May meeting. Copies of the book are available now from the library. The Book Chat will meet on Tuesday, May 29 at 1 p.m. in the Lawson Room on the second floor of the library. The Lunch & Lit Book Club meets on Wednesday, May 16 at 11:30 a.m. at The Three Pines. Their selection for the month is “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Allen Bradley. Both groups welcome new readers for discussion at every meeting.

Senior Social

Have a cup of coffee and a cookie and visit with people at the Common Grounds, 35 Albany St., Cazenovia on Wednesday, May 16 from 2-3:30 p.m.

Speakers will teach, inspire and entertain. Borrow a good book, play a game or just enjoy being in the company of others.

Farmers market

The Cazenovia Farmers Market has opened and regulars to the Saturday event will notice changes in the vendor line-up this year. A number of longtime participan­ts will be gone and have been replaced by some wellknown local entreprene­urs.

The absence of some vendors is not necessaril­y a negative occurrence, but because some have grown and moved away from the area or opened their own store fronts.

The market will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 12 in Memorial Park on Albany Street. For more informatio­n and a full list of vendors, including the new ones, visit the market’s Facebook page or cazenoviac­hamber.org.

Also, the Cazenovia Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Memorial Park on Thursday, May 17.

Cazenovia College Commenceme­nt will be held May 19. Colgate University will hold its Commenceme­nt Ceremony on May 20.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

“Black Panther” movie

Cazenovia Public Library will present two free screenings of “Black Panther” on Friday, May 18 at 3:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Community Room. The 2018 American superhero film is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

After the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the isolated, technologi­cally advanced nation of Wakanda to take his place as king. When an old enemy challenges his claim to the throne, T’Challa is drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the world at risk. The film is rated PG-13 and runs 134 minutes. Free popcorn provided. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library.

Kite Fest

Christian Women’s luncheon

The Oneida-Canastota Christian Women’s Club will hold its May 24 meeting at Theodore’s Restaurant, Route 5, Canastota for a buffet luncheon. Tickets are $14. Feature will be “The Powder Puff Girls” with Laura & Alex on “How do you see yourself? Wanna look better?”

The guest speaker will be Lis Ringwald of Boonville. Her topic will be “I Remember Mama,” relating to her life story -- you won’t want to miss it!

Lantern Festival

Plan to visit the lights of the Lantern Festival at sunset at the NYS Fairground­s in Syracuse May 25 through July 1. Stroll through a paved path lined with lantern sculptures illuminate­d by thousands of LED lights. Food, network and traditiona­l Chinese performanc­es every night inside the Internatio­nal Building. Open Tuesday through Sunday.

Fairy Garden making

Olive Branch Fairy Garden making will be held on Thursday, May 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Sullivan Parks & Recreation Building for ages 8-14. Looking for a miracle or some mischief? If so, come and join Olive Branch in making your own Fairy Garden for your house.

Oz-Stravaganz­a

Mark your calendars for the annual Oz-Stravaganz­a and its 41st annual Grand Oz Parade on June 2 at 2 p.m. in Chittenang­o. The event will be held from June 1-3.

Included will be the Costume Contest; a special guest of Oz; Toto Toddler Trot and Munchkin Mile Fun Run, Emerald City Idol singing competitio­n; Authors & Artist Alley; three silent auctions; Royal Historian Writing Contest; Coloring Contest; food and entertainm­ent.

Reunion Weekend

Join the Colgate Bookstore on Saturday, June 2 for two special events during Colgate University’s Reunion Weekend. From 11 a.m. to noon, stop by to meet rain forest animals from the Utica Zoo. Meet rain forest reptiles, insects, and a Sumatran Chicken. Free and open to children of all ages.

Then at 12:30, the bookstore will host its 33rd Annual Alumni Author Book Signing. Copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase and autographi­ng. The following alumni authors will be available for book signings:

Arts at the Palace

You are asked to join them at the Arts at the Palace in Hamilton on June 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. for a staged reading and world premiere of the musical “Perry Paree,” by Dianne Adams and James McDowell and directed by Anthony Salatino. A fictional biography, full of original show tunes, “Perry Paree” chronicles the life and career of dim-witted, but lovable crooner, Lenny London. On his often-hilarious journey, from his humble beginnings in the hayseed, star-struck town of Buttzville, R.I. to the slick, savvy world of show biz in New York City, Lenny makes a surprising discovery about himself.

The reading boasts an all-star cast including David Lowenstein, Lori Wilner, Celia Madeoy, Liam Fitzpatric­k, Mason McDowell, Eric Feola, Sara Donnellan, Amber Nicole Gatlin, John Downey and Jules Slocum. Tickets are $25 reserved table seating, $20 general admission. The evening will include light refreshmen­ts and a “talk back” after the reading.

Rummage sale

Bridgeport United Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale on Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28.

They are looking for donations of news and used items in good condition. Please call the church office at (315) 633-9745 to arrange a time to drop off items. It may take a few days to get back to you. The office staff is only part-time.
