Seniors close careers, youths take over

New York’s best in outdoor track and field converged on Cicero-North Syracuse for the state championsh­ips.

CICERO, N.Y. » It was a busy last couple of days at Cicero-North Syracuse High School with New York’s best in outdoor track and field converging for the 2018 New York State Championsh­ips.

Of the dozens of schools in attendance from across the state, local athletes from Oneida, Camden, VVS, Hamilton and Cazenovia represente­d Section III at the State Championsh­ips.

Camden freshman MacKenzie Mix finished just out of medal contention in the 200m dash, recording a 26.17 for fourth place. The Blue Devil youngster pushed her upperclass­men competitio­n, trailing only seniors in the 200. Natalie Ricci, of Cohoes, captured the event with a 25.43; Taylor Hunter, of Tapestry, earned second place with a 25.79; Nazjahe Boswell, World of Inq., posted a 26-flat.

It was a busy day for Mix at CNS. The Camden freshman also competed in the 400m dash, finishing in 59.64 for 11th in the state before joining teammates Morgan Lucason, Delainey Hebble, and Elizabeth Lucason for a 17th place finish in the 4x800 relay. The Camden quartet recorded a 9:34.78. First place Shenendeho­wa was the only team to finish under nine minutes with an 8:55.04.

Like Mix, Elizabeth Lucason, an eighth-grader, tested her mettle against some of the best upperclass­men in the state and held her own. Out of 27 participan­ts, the Blue Devil youngster finished seventh overall in the 1,500m, cruising to a 4:35.3 finish. Champion Katelyn Tuohy, of North Rockland, closed her run with a 4:14.45.
