Silversmith Reece Armitage plated teammate Vito Castronovo in the bottom half of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, but it was all the run support the Sherrill pitching staff needed. After
yielding a one-out single in the top of the seventh, DeRoche struck out the final twoGeneral batters for the save and the 4-2 win.
Game 1
After spotting Rome a 2-0 lead to open the first half of Saturday’s twin bill, Sherrill knotted the contest at 2-2 in the bottom half of the fourth when Chris Turco sent an Alex Hernandez offering over the fence with a man aboard for a two-run homer.
Luis Atiles put the Generals back on top with a solo homer of his own in the top of the fifth to answer for Rome, but the Silversmiths got things rolling in the bottom of the sixth frame. With two outs, Sean Doherty singled home Andrew Roden, who had taken first on a hit-by-pitch to tie the contest at three a piece. Doherty stole second and Matthew Fitzgerald earned first by becoming the second Silversmith hit by a pitch in the inning. Matthew Elliot followed with a single to score Doherty for a 4-3 Sherrill lead and chase Hernandez for Kevin Manning. Manning was able to get the final out of the inning to minimize the damage, but not before Fitzgerald took home on a wild pitch to put the Silversmiths up 5-3.
Following a scoreless seventh, Rome plated a run in the top of the eighth to close the gap to 5-4. Kenny Michael singled with one out before Cooper hit Woody Woodruff in the next at-bat to put a pair of runners aboard. Stephen Peters followed with a single to score Michael and sendWoodruff to third. Peters took second on a error, and Rome had runners on second and third with one out. With the game hanging in the balance, the Silversmiths elected to turn to relief man Jake Vennaro. The move paid off as Vennaro retired the next two General batters in order to escape the inning and preserve the 5- 4 Silversmith lead.
The Silversmiths were unable to pad their lead in the bottom of the eighth, and Rome made them pay for it. Working against Silversmith relief pitcher Rylan Baker, Generals Joe Bramanti, Shawn Tyler and Derek Miller drew consecutive walks with one out to load the bases. In the next at-bat, Donald Stokes singled to score Bramanti and Pedrouzo. Following an error in right fieldand thenat second base, Miller scored for a 7-5 Rome advantage.
