DURHAMVILLE » June 14, 2018 is a favorite day at Durhamville Elementary. Our second grade students share a Flag Day presentation with our school community. The following are some facts second graders would like to share with everyone.

BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher in Wisconsin, had his class celebrate the first “Flag Birthday” in 1885. Then, in 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.

Flag Day is always on June 14. Flag Day honors the flag. The redontheflag stands for bravery. Sometimes we have to fight for our country and our freedom.

The seven red stripes and six white stripes on the flag stand for the 13 colonies.

The 50 stars on the flag stand for the 50 states.

Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled ban- ner as a poem, “The Defence of Fort McHenry.” The sight of a lone United States Flag still flying over Fort McHenry at daybreak during the War of 1812 inspired his poem. The famous words “And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”

We honor the f lag by saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Remember to take your hat or cap off and place it or your right hand over your heart.

Remember to keep the flag off the ground. If it touches the ground you are being disrespectful.

The flag should be properly lit if left outside overnight.

Some people do not celebrate Flag Day because of religious beliefs.

Second graders performed the following songs: “This Land is Your Land,” “America the Beautiful,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

A huge thank you to the second graders at Durhamville Elementary for teaching us about Flag Day!
