Pet rocks, magicians, snakes and dinos

CANASTOTA, N.Y. » Every summer, the Canastota Public Library holds special summer events and programmin­g for kids of all ages. In addition to Summer Reading challenges, this summer, the library is planning special guests, craft days and weekly Storytime sessions.

Two craft days are planned at the library. On Monday, July 9 at 2 p.m., kids can come and create Pet Rocks, which tie in with the Summer Reading Program theme of “Libraries Rock.” The second craft day will be held on July 16 at 2 p.m. At this session, participan­ts will make Musical Instrument­s. Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., aDo-It-Yourself craft cartwill be available in the Children’s Area for students to create a piece of art.

Special events this month include a magic show, a circus, snakes and dinosaurs.

Moreland theMagicia­n‘s ‘Symphony of Magic’ will be held on Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. Join DavidMorel­and the Magician for this high-energy, 45-minute show packed with music, magic, comedy, puppetry, and several routines featuring members of the audience.

On Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m., Dan the Snake Man will offer the audience a unique opportunit­y to experience many species of exotic reptiles. The audiencewi­ll be invited to interact with the animals on an up-close and personal level by viewing, touching and asking lots of questions.

The Silly Bubble Circus performs at the library on Wednesday, July 25 at 7 p.m. Watch this performanc­e as an entire circus comes alive at the library with jugglers, clowns and more.

Finally, on July 30 at 7 p.m., visit the library for “Dinosaur Dig” with Field Paleontolo­gists Mike and Roberta Straka. Youths and their families are invited to take part in a scientific exploratio­n highlighti­ng the world of dinosaurs, fossils and rocks/ minerals. Their fun-filled show will cover the formation of fossils, herbivores vs. carnivores, and basics of geology (rocks and minerals).

Storytimes are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of each week. On Wednesdays, babies and their caregivers are welcome to attend Baby & Me Lapsit at 10 a.m. In these sessions, newborns to 24 month old and the baby’s caregiver will be introduced to the library through stories, songs and rhymes. On Thursdays at 10 a.m., preschoole­rs will hear stories, make crafts and sing songs. These programs will run through Aug. 1 and 2.
