BOCES library recognizes excellence
Teachers, faculty and staff were recognized for everything from excellence to years of service.
VERONA, N.Y. » The MOBOCES School Library System recognized outstanding students, teachers, administrators and school librarians in the region at its 2018 SLS Administrator Breakfast and Annual Meeting on May 22.
Students in grades K-6 from five school districts – Canastota, Camden, Madison, Rome, Stockbridge Valley – were recognized for their writing and artwork, which is featured in this year’s SLS calendar. The students’ work was part of the 5th annual student calendar contest, with a theme of “Making Connections at your School Library.”
SLS also presented a number of other awards:
The School Librarian of the Year award went to Cathy Woodruff from Ridge Mills Elementary School in Rome. She was nominated by Mary Sue Brost from Annsville Elementary in Camden and Laura Winchester from Madison.
Mary Sue and Laura were separately recognized for their years of service. Both are retiring in June.
The SLS Teacher of the Year award went to Jessica Harney from Camden. She was nominated by librarian Jennine Bloomquist.
The Administrators of the Year awards went to VVS Principals Carrie Hodkinson (Middle School) and Andy Brown (High School). They were nominated by their respective school librarians, Tina Laramie and Amy Austin.
This year’s featured speaker was Renee Hobbs, a Professor at the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island, where she directs the Media Education Lab, which advances media literacy education through scholarship and community service.
