Opera House set for annual quilt show

EARLVILLE, N.Y. » The Earlville Opera House will host its annual Quilt Show, sponsored by Sew Nice of Norwich, beginning July 14.

The show features three new exhibitions celebrating the rich heritage of New York state’s quilting culture. Contemporary and re- gional quilts will be on display in the East and West Galleries, with featured local quilt artist Kathie Webster of Sherburne, N.Y. exhibiting her vibrant quilt talents in the Arts Café.

Exhibitions run from July 14 through Aug. 10 with the opening reception on Saturday, July 14 from 1-3 p.m. Quilts can be viewed Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 3 p.m. Gallery visits are free and open to the public.

To coincide with the

Quilt Show opening, local musicians Steven Blais and Dave Barker will perform in EOH’s new Courtyard Series from 1-3 p.m. Their motto is: “We rock up the folk, and folk up the rock!”

“The good thing about two guys who aren’t very good at rote memorization is that some kind of new thing happens every time we play a song,” said Blais. BARKER * BLAZE is about songs that are strong enough to be messed with and still have their essence shine through – songs from greats like Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt; from people who’ve played the Earlville Opera House like Peter Rowan; and from people who will play the EOH soon, like the Subdudes.

Barker cut his musical teeth in Syracuse late ‘60s band The Beasts. Blais fronted Ithaca’s punk/ funk/ reggae/ rockabilly quartet Identity Crisis in the early ‘80s. These days, Blais sings, squeezes accordion, plays guitar and percussion in the Cajun/Celtic/ country group Tumbleweed Gumbo.

The EOH Theater is wheelchair-accessible with a ramp and a lift.
