Senior honored by firefighters with scholarship
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) awarded the 2018 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Jourdan Howard of Holland Patent, N.Y.
Howard received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from Brian McQueen, FASNY director.
“My dad is a firefighter and paramedic,” said Howard. “I joined the fire department because I loved going to the firehouse with him and seeing how much of an impact he had on people’s lives.”
Howard will attend Hartwick College as a nursing major with a minor in criminal justice. She hopes to become a forensic nurse.
Howard served in the Holland Patent Hose Company for two years. She is an EMT-Basic and American Heart As- sociation BLS Instructor, who started a CPR program at her school that certifies more than 400 students a year.
Howard is one of 25 students chosen for this scholarship.
“This scholarship means so much to my family and I. I have put so much effort into my community and my school to make people safer and increase awareness of how people can help others,” Howard said.
Scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, Scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
