Cops: Man shot child with BB gun

HAMILTON, N.Y. » A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition after police say a Morrisvill­e man shot him with a BB gun.

Edward S. Highers, 26, of 11 Radnor Road, Morrisvill­e, was charged with first-degree assault, a class B felony; first-degree reckless endangerme­nt, a class D felony; and endangerin­g the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeano­r.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on July 12, deputies responded to Hamilton Hospital after reports of a child who had been shot in the chest with a BB gun. Police say Highers shot a 9-year- old boy with the BB gun while playing a game called “one pump,” where each would pump the BB gun and shoot each other. At one point, police say Highers pumped the gun multiple times and then shot the boy in the chest, causing the BB to lodge inside the boy’s skin next to his heart.

The boy was transporte­d to Hamilton Hospital and then to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse in critical condition. At this time, the boy is still in the hospital being treated for his injury.

Higherswas arraigned in Hamilton Town Court and held at Madison County Jail on$10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court on July 16.
