MARYLAND - Joyce A. Carter, 85, of Maryland, formerly of E. 7th St., Oneida Castle, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 23, 2018, at Lighthouse Senior Living in Ellicott City, Maryland, with her loving family at her side. She was born on July 1, 1933, in North Adams, Massachuse­tts, the daughter of Kenneth and Maybelle Crosier Gasper. She was a graduate of Pittsfield High School, Class of 1950. She received her nursing degree from Union University School of Nursing in Albany, NY in 1953. It was there that she met her husband, Daniel Carter, while he was attending school at Union University School of Pharmacy. On July 10, 1954, Joyce was united in marriage to Daniel C. Carter in Albany, NY. Mr. Carter passed away on October 26, 1989. Joyce was a nurse for Oneida Hospital for twenty-six years, retiring as the Director of Nursing in 1993. While in Oneida, she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and former President of the Oneida Castle Garden Club. She traveled extensivel­y, including in Europe and Australia. She loved being a part of bridge club in both Oneida and Maryland, and playing other games like Mah Jong and Phase 10 with friends and family. Even after she moved to Maryland, she held dear her friendship­s with those in Oneida, and also made treasured new friendship­s in Maryland. Joyce loved the beach and delighted in her grandchild­ren. Her most cherished times were those spent with her family. Surviving are her four children, Donald (Amy) Carter, of Dale City, VA; Cathy (Thomas) Romeo, of Laurel, MD; Steven (Peggy) Carter, of Purcellvil­le, VA; and Caryl (Jon) Svenson, of Ashburn, VA; and twelve grandchild­ren, Karen Carter, Michele (Eric) Schnyder, Kelsey (Thomas) Romeo-Stuppy, Danny Romeo, Daniel Carter, Ross Svenson, Scott Carter, Michael Carter, Matthew Romeo, Jason Carter, Robert Carter, and Berit Svenson; two great-grandchild­ren; Grayson Schnyder and Elliott Stuppy; a brother, Kenneth (Karen) Gasper, of Bellington, WA; and four nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Laurel, MD. Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Valley View Cemetery, Oneida, NY.
