Gardens rededicated to honor nurseryman
ORISKANY, N.Y. » Thirty-two years after the Cornell Co- operative Extension Oneida County gardens were dedi- cated to local nurseryman and Rome resident Parker F. Scripture, a sign to honor his life was unveiled July 7 at his namesake garden in Oriskany while his daughter, Sarah ScriptureMcDade, looked on.
A life-long resident of Rome, Scripture graduated from Rome Free Academy (RFA) in 1929 and went on to RPI to study mechanical engineering. In 1949, he acquired a 40 acre tract of land on Rome-Oriskany Road, which became Scripture’s Nursery.
In the off-season, Scripture and his wife Janet used the dining room table to work on numerous projects and publications promoting the history of Rome and Oneida County. Sarah ScriptureMcDade, along with her older sister and two older brothers, could attest that these two avocations, landscaping and history, alternated seasons throughout several decades of Scripture family life.
The Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens surround Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County and are situated on 15 acres of land owned by Oneida County in Oriskany, N.Y.
The gardens are designed and maintained by Master Gardener volunteers as an outdoor learning environment that invites use by the general public and educational institutions.
