Cops: Oneida city man had meth lab in attic
CANASTOTA, N.Y. » An Oneida man was arrested in Canastota for cooking methamphetamine after reports of a strong chemical odor in the neighborhood was reported.
Investigators with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Canastota Police Department arrived at 102 E. Chapel St. in Canastota on Aug. 8 and entered the apartment, where they found Ronald R. Ortman Jr., 38, of Oneida.
Ortman admitted to investigators that he had been cooking meth in the apartment and hid the lab in the attic.
Due to the risks and haz- ards of the meth lab, the building was evacuated and a search warrant was executed. Police say they discovered two meth labs in the residence, which were seized by the New York State Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team.
Ortman was arrested and charged with seconddegree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A felony; third-degree unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine, a class D felony; seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
Ortman was arraigned at the Town of Sullivan Court and held at the Madison County Jail on $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to reappear at the Village of Canastota Court on Aug. 14.
