Summer concerts winding down

Here are the concerts for this coming week.

In the City of Sherrill on the gazebo at the Reilly-Mumford Memorial park, The Party Nuts will play on Tuesday, Aug. 14 along with an Outdoor Movie Night. The Party Nuts will perform at the usual time with their rock and roll sing-alongs that are fun for all. After the concert, stay to watch a movie under the stars. The movie to be shown is “Sing!”

At Sylvan Beach on Wednesday, Aug. 15, playing from 7-9 p.m. will be Swamp Drivers. Concerts held this year are sponsored by the Village of Sylvan Beach.

In Canastota this week, Fab Cats will play on Thursday, Aug. 16 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The band is a rock and roll party experience that features the spirit of the ‘60s. From the British invasion to the Motor city, to the West coast. Rain date Thursday, Aug. 23. The Fab Cats is the last concert for the 2018 year. The concerts have been sponsored by the Village of Canastota Recreation Commission.

In Chittenang­o’s Dr. West Park on Tuesday, Aug. 14, playing from 6-8 p.m. Mood Swing on the deck will play for your listening pleasure. Concerts will continue through September.

The concert playing in Higinbotha­m Park in Oneida from 6-8 p.m. is Gary Johnson. Come and listen to the beautiful music.

The final concert for the Veterans Night observance at Thursdays on the Green in Hamilton will be JJ Murphy, a Hamilton native Nashville-based soulful folk-jazz. He has been touring the country with his soulful folk-jazz group. Music is played from 7-9 p.m. Food trucks are on the Green for you to enjoy refreshmen­ts.

Cazenovia Library

Do you love wine and want to learn more about important wine-producing regions? The Cazenovia Public Library will host a special presentati­on for wine enthusiast­s on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. Journalist and author Sharon Nagel will explore Pic Saint Loup, a wine-producing area in southern France’s Languedoc wine region.

Nagel is a well-known contributo­r to the internatio­nal wine industry. She grew up in the English countrysid­e before relocating the Mediterran­ean. A passionate reader, writer, and wine lover, Nagel moved to a former wine estate in the Pic St. Loup to begin a career in wine writing and translatio­n. Her recent book, “Un Terroir, des Hommes: Le Pic Saint Loup – The Authoritat­ive Book for Pic Saint Loup Wine Lovers,” was awarded the “Best in the World” title in the translatio­n category at the 2015 Gourmand Wine & Drinks Awards.

“Miracles Every where-Just Look” Luncheon is the topic for the next Oneida- Canastota gathering of the Christian Women’s Club to be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at Theodore’s Restaurant, Route 5, Canastota. The luncheon will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets for the buffet are $14.

Featured will be “Decorative Glass Garden Flowers” by Lisa Gardiner of Chittenang­o. The speaker will be Carol Weiman of Auburn. Carol Rothwell of Music Driftin’ of Manlius will provide the music for the luncheon.

Cazenovia Movie

The Cazenovia Public Library will present a free screening of “Avengers: Infinity War” on Friday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room. The 2018 superhero film is based on the Marvel comics superhero team the Avengers. It is the sequel to the “Avengers” (2012) and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015)

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers unite to defeat their most powerful adversary yet - the evil Thanos. The team and their allies must stop the tyrant before he collects all six infinity stones and uses them to inflict his will on the universe.

The film is rated PG13 and runs 149 minutes. Free popcorn will be provided. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library.

Move Night

The City of Sherrill will screen the movie “Sing!” at dusk on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Reilly-Mumford Memorial Park as part of the Summer Outdoor Movie Night. The Party Nuts will perform prior to the movie from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Chittenang­o Garden Club

The Chittenang­o Garden Club will present “Seed Saving” with Matt Sullenburg­er of Syracuse University on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chittenang­o Library community Room.

Attendees will learn the how to’s of and the science of saving seeds for future plantings. The public is invited to attend.

Senior Trip

The City of Oneida, City of Sherrill and Village of Canastota are sponsoring a bus trip to the New York State Fair for seniors on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The bus will leave the Oneida Towers at 9 a.m. with a stop at the Canastota Pool and leave the Fair to return at 6 p.m.

Seniors 60 and older are admitted free to the Fair. Chevy Court concert at 2 p.m. with the Temptation­s. The bus fee is $10. This trip is open to seniors 55 and older.

Correction­al Job Fairs

The Oneida County Sherril’s community Affairs Unit will hold multiple job fairs in an effort to fill current vacant full time and part time positions within the Oneida County Correction­al Facility.

The community Affairs Unit will be at the following locations: Sanger town Mall in New Hartford on Monday, Aug. 20 through Friday, Aug. 24 from noon to 8 p.m. Members of the Sheriff’s Office will be present to talk about a career in the field of correction­al services along with job specificat­ions, requiremen­ts, benefits and the hiring process.

Applicatio­ns will also be available for those to immediatel­y apply for one of the current vacant correction officer positions.

Pottery Fair

On Saturday, Aug. 18 and Sunday, Aug. 19 the 38th Annual Pottery Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, 3883 Stone Quarry Hill Road, Cazenovias­qhaop.org

Syracuse Ceramic Guild’s event includes the work of over 30 artists for sale, raku firing demonstrat­ions and “Claytown” for budding artists. admission is $5 per person.

Drum and Bugle Corps Wins

The Upstate Independen­t Drum and Bugle Corps is proud to announce that they have won their class for the second consecutiv­e year. On Fruday, July 20, UIDBC traveled to Rochester to compete in the 100th annual New York State American Legion Convention Parade.

The Corps is always welcoming new membership, has no mandatory membership fees and provides all instrument­s. If you are ages 11 through adult, membership of any ability is welcome. Basketball Court Donation

The Salvation Army is pleased to announce that the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation has donated a brand new basketball court to the Salvation Army’s Family Place Program. Century Heating and Air Conditioni­ng also contribute­d to the project.

An official ribbon cutting ceremony and court unveiling with the Boeheim’s and Rick CEO of Century Heating and Air Conditioni­ng and Salvation Army Board President was held July 25 at 10 a.m. at The Salvation Army Family Place, located at 350 Rich Street in Syracuse.

Merchants Night

The Canastota Civic Club will hold their monthly meeting with the topic Merchants Night on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Johnnies Pier, Route 31, Canastota. A social time will be held at 6:15 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

John and Mike Mazzulo are co-chairmen of the program.

Tickets are $15 per member and $30 for guest.

Duck Race Food Pantry

The ducks have been in their glory this summer with the hot days followed by ample amounts of rain. The little waders should be in great shape to sprint down Chittenang­o Creek to the finish.

All you need to do is adopt your ducks as you see them for sale about the community.

Signs and locations will be abundant shortly.

Anyone interested in volunteeri­ng to sell or purchase Ducks for the Pantry’s Duck Race to be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, should call Patti Hedrick at 315-699-7976.

The Pantry provided over 100,000 meals to area residents in Bridgeport June 2017 to June 2018.

Yards of the Month

Congratula­tions to the July 2018 Yards of the Month. The City of Sherrill is happy to announce that the Henry yard at 726 Kinsley Street and the Wood yard at 414 Betsinger Road were selected as the July winners. They thank all residents for their nomination­s and participat­ion and look forward to selecting two more yards in August.

June winners were Blaking yard at 205 Hamilton Avenue and Droft yard at 716 Sherrill Road. The City of Sherrill knows many Sherrill residents take great pride in their properties and the many beautiful lawns, yards and gardens contribute to Sherrill’s welcoming appearance. The city of Sherrill will select two properties each month in the months of June, July, August and September to recognize residents efforts. Yards that show great care and comply with local ordinances will be eligible. City of Sherrill employees, commission­ers and community representa­tives will select the yards and present a special sign to each selected yard to be displayed for the month. The signs will be collected at the end of the month and then displayed in other yards in the following months. All yards will be looked at by individual­s can also suggest beautiful properties by emailing Sara Getman, recreation supervisor, sgetman@sherrillny.org. Properties can only be selected one time per year in an effort to recognize multiple properties.
