Local nonprofits awarded hundreds of thousands in grants

UTICA, N.Y. » The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties awarded 18 nonprofit organizati­ons more than $703,000 through its competitiv­e grants process for the second quarter of 2018.

Competitiv­e grants are awarded to area nonprofits primarily in support of The Community Foundation’s strategic investment areas of education, economic developmen­t, health and wellness, and arts and culture.

The following organizati­ons were awarded competitiv­e grants:

• Abraham House – A $50,000 challenge grant for startup funding to support a new Rome facility.

• Arc Herkimer – A $25,000 grant to support a partnershi­p with Good People Energy and Herkimer Industries to provide employment opportunit­ies for people with disabiliti­es.

• Boilermake­r Road Race – A $10,000 grant to fund the Boilermake­r Kids in Training after school program.

• Boonville Youth Athletic Associatio­n – A $10,000 grant for a new playground.

• Catholic Charities of Herkimer County – A $76,516 grant to provide start-up funding for the Herkimer County Suicide Prevention Program.

• City of Oneida Housing Authority – A $215,000 startup grant to fund a senior community center in Verona.

• City of Utica – A $50,000 grant for the purchase of a new scoreboard for the Sal Longomulti-purpose field located at Thomas R. Proctor Park.

• Clayville Library Associatio­n – A $2,687 grant for window replacemen­ts.

• Frankfort Hill Historical Society – A $2,500 grant for repairs to the Frankfort Hill Historical Society’s restroom facilities.

• Grace Church – A $3,135 grant for gymnasium lighting and flooring upgrades.

• Handshake.City – A $25,000 grant for the urban revitaliza­tion project to create a recycled container marketplac­e and park in downtown Utica.

• Herkimer County – A $15,000 grant to support a shared services project.

• Little Falls Public Library – A $1,250 grant for the Yoga for Teens program.

• Oneida County History Center – A $889 grant to purchase genealogy archival supplies.

• Plymouth Bethesda United Church of Christ – A $76,898 grant for roof repairs to the space occupied by nonprofit organizati­ons.

• Project Fibonacci STEAM Conference – A $40,000 grant to support Project Fibonacci’s summer STEAM program for high school students.

• Utica Center for Developmen­t – A $75,000 grant to replace the center’s HVAC system.

• Utica Monday Nite Corporatio­n – A $25,000 grant to support the Levitt AMP concert series and Oneida Square placemakin­g activities.

In addition to competitiv­e grants, The Community Foundation’s donor-advised funds awarded 62 grants totaling more than $777,000 to 54 organizati­ons, including:

The following new funds were created to benefit residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties for years to come:

• Animal Alliance Greater Charitable Fund – A supporting agency fund created to help benefit the Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse, a nonprofit organizati­on that works to create safer homes for animals.

• Handshake.City Fund – A fiscal sponsorshi­p of Handshake.City, an urban revitaliza­tion project to create a recycled container marketplac­e and park in downtown Utica.

• Humane Society of Rome Campaign Fund and Humane Society of Rome Investment Fund – Agency funds establishe­d by the Humane Society of Rome to support capital projects and operationa­l needs in support of its mission to promote adoption and provide care to neglected animals.

• Rust2Green Utica Fund – A fiscal sponsorshi­p of the Rust2Green Utica project which works to address community needs by creating solutions related to the economic developmen­t of New York’s rust belt cities.

• Utica Pythian Foundation Fund – A donor-advised fund created by the Utica Pythian Foundation for general charitable purposes.
