Nora Mulroy scored for the second time in as many matches but two second half goals by Saint Louis proved to be the difference as the Billikens defeated the Raiders 3-1 in the Colgate Classic finale Monday at Tyler’s Field.

Both squads took four shots and knocked in one goal each in a tightly contested opening 35 minutes of action. Carly Kissinger opened the scoring for Saint Louis just over 13 minutes into the contest on a fast break opportunity. It was the first goal the Raiders had allowed in the first half this season. Kissinger raced in towards the Raiders goal line and drifted

a shot into the right corner of the cage to give the Billikens a 1-0 advantage.

Mulroy drew Colgate even with her second goal of the season at the 22-minute mark on the opening stanza. From the sideline near midfield, Olivia Krogermeier stretched a long pass through traffic and it found Mulroy near the top of the shooting circle, where she turned and fired a high shot bar down to level the match at 1-1

The Raiders were poised for more in thewaningminutes of the half after Saint Louis committed three green cards over a two-minute span. With Colgate on the attack, Mulroy nearly notched her second goal of the match after beating the keeper and finding an open shooting lane. Fromthe opposite side of the cage, Molly Feid raced across to make a strong defensive save and clear the threat.

Colgate had its chances with the offensive advantage, but Saint Louis successfully killed off the cautions and reached halftime with the score still deadlocked at 1-1.

The Billikens defensive stand provided momentum coming out of the break, as Saint Louis outshot the Raiders 9-3 over the final 35 minutes. Saint Louis pressured quickly out of the gates and was awarded three penalty cornerswithin the first six minutes of the final frame. On the third attempt, Emily Wastell put Saint Louis back in front 2-1 with a goal from straight away.

Mulroy was inches away from tying the match late when a long outlet pass reached Carter Leahy near the corner beyond the defensive back line. Leahy delivered a quick pass in front of the cage andMulroy connected on the one-timer shot, but it rattled off the post and Saint Louis was able to clear.

Wastell struck againwith an insurance goal with less than five minute remaining in regulation and Saint Louiswent on to win by a final score of 3-1.

Sunday Results Colgate Field Hockey

The Colgate field hockey team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat LIU Brooklyn, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Tyler’s Field.

Colgate held an impressive 11-0 shots advantage at the end of the first half. The Raiders dominated possession and came away with several opportunities but six saves from LIU Brooklyn keeper Molly Jannell kept the game scoreless at the half.

Despite the offensive dominance, LIU Brooklyn drew first blood early in the second half after converting on a penalty corner. Jenna Chrobolowski took the corner and raced in front of the goal mouth to deflect the centering shot fromEva Van Wakeren past Colgate keeper Anna Unger to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

LIU Brooklyn’s lead was short-lived as Colgate re- sponded just over a minute later. Following the goal, the Raiders immediately took the ball down into LIUterritory and fromjust inside the shooting circle NoraMulroy spun around to crank a high shot over the pads of Jannell to level the score at 1-1 in the 43rd minute.

The Raiders continued to pressure offensively and eventually netted what proved to be the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Off a corner from Maggie Lake, Taylor Casamassa quickly sent a pass to Olivia Krogermeier at the top of the shooting circle, where Krogermeier fired a shot through traffic and it was deflected high in the air and crossedthe goal line just out of reach of Jannell to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

The Blackbirds did not go away easily, earning a couple of great chances late after pulling their goalie for an extra attacker. Anna Unger was up to the task, though, making two spectacular saves in the final five minutes of regulation to secure the victory for Colgate.

“Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain it,” Beckham said in a statement. “I don’t know if it’s a relief, I don’t know — it’s a combination of everything. You’ve worked all your life to get to this point and it’s finally here.”

Beckham felt getting a new deal would be just a matter of time.

“I knewthat it would get done, it just was a matter of when and I’m just so happy that it is finally done now,” he said.

In his first four seasons, Beckham has caught 313 passes for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Beckhamhas not played in any of the Giants’ three preseason games as new coach Pat Shurmur has taken a very cautious approach with the catalyst to his offense coming off his first major professional injury.

It is unlikely that he will play in the preseason finale on Thursday against the New England Patriots so his first game action since being hurt on Oct. 8 will be against the Jaguars at home on Sept. 9.

A lot has been written about Beckham’s contract situation since the end of last season. There were reports the Giants were involved in trade talks with the Rams and many wondered whether coowners John Mara and Steve Tisch wanted to spend a lot of money on a player who also created some disturbing news off the field.

Beckham annoyed many by going to Florida for a boat outing with teammates before a playoff game after the 2016 regular season. He then played poorly in a one-sided loss to the Packers.

His reputation took another hit when a video was posted with him in a room where a hand-rolled cigarette was visible. A woman next to him had unidentified white powder on a nearby table.

During this past offseason, Beckham seemed to mature. Heworked hard to overcome his injury, stayed out of trouble and developed a good relationship with Shurmur. He also said all the right things when asked about getting a new contract.

Beckham’s agent Zeke Sandhu spoke with assistant general manager Kevin Abrams for almost two hours on the patio overlooking the field during a practice earlier this month.
