Tri-Valley League girls find success on pitch

The Oneida and Camden girls soccer teams are less than a week into their regular season slates, and both teams already have reason to celebrate after capturing tournament championsh­ips.

ONEIDA 1, HOMER 1 » Three days into the season, the Oneida girls soccer team already has some new hardware.

Oneida took down Homer in the championsh­ip game of the Chittenang­o More Than a Game tournament on Friday, surviving a penalty shootout that advanced to the sudden death round. After both teams converted 3-of-5 penalties in the first round, Jude Ryan buried her try for Oneida, and Kayla Suppa made a diving save on Homer’s next try to give Oneida the tournament championsh­ip.

Paige Nashton got Oneida on the board in the first half, but Homer found an equalizer on a Maddy Cole goal in the second half to set up the shootout.

Oneida’s Rachel DeRuby took home Most Outstandin­g Player honors, while teammates Nicole Smith, Sophia Sanchez, and Kyra Shlotzhaue­r were named to the all-tournament team.

CAMDEN1, MEXICO0 » Molly Dunfield flicked an overtime header over the Mexico keeper Briana Urqhuart in overtime to put Camden up 1-0 in the first period of overtime during Thursday’s girls soccer tilt. The Blue Devil defense and keeper Hannah Hughes made the goal stand up, fending off several late Phoenix rallies to hold on for a 1-0 win and the Sunsine Daydream Tournament championsh­ip. Hughes was named tournament MVP for her efforts between the posts.
