Program highlights importance of maps
Maps of Rome will be held at the Rome Historical Society on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 5:30p.m.
ROME, N.Y. » The Oneida County History Center will present a program on the Maps of Rome at the Rome Historical Society on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
Maps tell stories. They document the land and the changes that people have made to it. Earliest known maps of the region were for military operations and exploration. Early patent maps were the first attempt at dividing up the frontier. Later maps outline the routes of canals and railroads, neighborhoods and factories. Underlying all these maps is the story of the history of the region.
Patrick Reynolds will discuss a variety of maps fromthe region using modern geospatial technology to overlay early maps onto current maps of the area. County Atlas’s and Sanborn maps will be discussed as a tool for researchers, as well as some recently-uncovered maps found at the Rome Histor- ical Society.
Reynolds is currently the Museum Educator at the Rome Historical Society. A graduate of SUNY Oneonta in American History, he received MA in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. He hasworked in museums and public history for more than 30 years.
