BUILDING WITH LEGOS

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. » A rainy day in Cazenovia was the perfect time to go the library and play with LEGOs.

The Cazenovia Public Library invited children of all ages to the library’s community room Monday to channel their inner architect and get to building. Last time, Children’s Programming Coordinator Jenna Wright challenged children to build a car to race others; this time around, they had to build a bridge and see just how much weight it could hold.

“I think it’s important to be doing something like this,” Wright said. “The children do a lot of problem solving to figure out what design works, what doesn’t work and how to adjust it. They’re doing real life math and science with LEGOs while having fun and helping each other out.”

Children set to work almost immediately, grabbing pieces to put together a strong and sturdy bridge that could survive the tests.

Janiel l e King, of Erieville, was at the Cazenovia Library with her two daughters and two sons; Krisalynn, 3, Gabrielle, 15 months, Rick Jr., 6, and Dominic, 8.

“The children get a chance to use their imagination,” King said. “If they weren’t here, they’d be playing with LEGOs in Krisal- ynn’s room.”

Among the builders was Alex Brown, 9, of Pompey, who truly enjoys building and putting small pieces to-

gether to make something much larger.

“It’s satisfying to build. You can build it and show them,” Alex said. “It’s cool that you can build something out of small pieces. When I grow up, I want to be a construction worker.”

When asked, Alex said he could see himself not just building, but designing buildings in the future.
