CANASTOTA, N.Y. » The Canastota Public Library is offering Saturday ukulele lessons taught by instructor Deb Guarneiri.

Dates of classes are Sept 29; Oct. 20 and 27; Nov. 3 and 10; and Dec. 8 and 15. There are three different sessions of classes will be offered on each of the planned Saturdays.

Introducti­on to Ukulele Basics will begin at 12:30 p.m. on those days. In this class, students will learn the fret board and become comfortabl­e holding, tuning, strumming and learning some first songs. At 1:30 p.m.,, Basic Ukulele Class will focus on learning more songs as well as becoming comfortabl­e playing using tab sheets. Hawaiian Song Class will begin at 2:30 p.m. In this session, students will learn the basic pronunciat­ion of Hawaiian words, stylized strums and songs popular on the Islands in both English and Hawaiian.

For the last class of every month, Kanikapila will be substitute­d for the Hawaiian Song session. Kanikapila is the Hawaiian word for “play in” or “jamsession.” This if for players of all levels. Music, lyrics and chord tabs are provided on an overhead projector and players are invited to come and join in with their ukes.

The library has two ukuleles that can be borrowed with a MidYork Library card. The library is also holding a fundraiser raffle for a Fender ukulele. The library is raffling off a three-color Sunburst Fender ukulele valued at more than $300. The uke has a flame maple top, mahogany back and sides, aged white neck and body finding, t-bucket pinstriped rosette and an elegant three color Sunburst gloss finish. It is currently on display at the library. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Proceeds will benefit library programs.
