Learning heads outdoors
SHERBURNE, N.Y. » Friends of Rogers will continue offering new monthly programs at Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne.
Explore a specific topic with an experienced expert ina casual atmosphere during “Learning Lectures,” to be held the first Wednesday of each month. On the second Thursday of each month, get outside for a fun educational adventure with “EdVentures.” For the month of October, both “Learning Lectures” and “EdVentures” focus on the transitional season of autumn.
On Oct. 3, “Grass into Gardens” continues the “Learning Lecture” series. Lawns are challenging to maintain, require costly chemicals, and need an excess of water. This interactive program will demonstrate how easy it is to turn high-maintenance grass into a beautiful garden. Planting native flowers and shrubs can cre- ate a diverse wildlife habitat, turning a yard into a masterpiece. Learn the transition steps and what plants are correct for the area. Light refreshments and take-home materials will be provided.
Go on a “Fall Foliage Foray” during the second “EdVenture” on Oct. 11. Come for a sunset hike on FarmTower trail for a view of the Chenango Valley in its autumn splendor. Along the way, learn more about how and why trees provide this colorful display each year and why this region, in particular, is ideal for experiencing this natural phenomenon. Apple cider will be provided at the conclusion of the hike.
