ONEIDA- John M. Wimmer, 90, Main Street, died Wednesday evening, September 26, 2018, in the Extended Care Facility of the Oneida Healthcare Center, where he had been a patient for the past five days. Born in Canastota, on March 18, 1928, he was the son of Francis and Florence Cary Wimmer. A lifelong resident of this area, John was educated in Oneida schools and served during World War II, with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He married Betty Gean Zabele in Montrose, Pennsylvan­ia on December 8, 1962. Mrs. Wimmer died on July 17, 2016. John owned and operated with his late wife, Betty, the Wimmer Farm and Wimmer’s Nursery. For many years, he was an over the road tractor-trailer driver and was a member of the Harness Horsemen’s Associatio­n. Surviving are two daughters, Lynn Wimmer of Oneida and Johene Dwyer and her companion, Jeff Congden of Camden; two sons, Dennis M. and his wife, Wendy Wimmer of the Villages, Florida and Kevin J. Wimmer and his companion, Debbie O’Connor of Cicero; two step-daughters, Brenda and her husband, Terry Bennett of Oneida and Judy Lee Snyder of Nedrow; twelve grandchild­ren, seventeen grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews. John was predecease­d by two sisters, Marie Roney and Rita Raymond and one brother, Donald Wimmer. Funeral services will be 11:30 AM, Wednesday at the family plot in West Verona Cemetery with the Reverend Kevin Bailey, officiatin­g. There are no hours of visitation.
