UTICA, N.Y. >> If you’ve been wondering about the advantages of owning your own home versus paying rent to the landlord each month, or what you need to ensure your first time home buying experience will go smoothly, the UNHS Home Ownership Center (HOC) will present at the free Homeownership Workshop hosted by the Utica Municipal Housing Authority on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Utica Public Library in the Second Floor Music Room, starting at 5:30 pm.

The HOC’s Homeownership Center Manager Kristen Graves will present a summarized version of the Home Buyer Education class covering the steps to take to become a successful home owner. Information on the different down payment assistance options that are available will be presented as well.

Statistics show that consumers who use HUD- approved housing counseling services have 30 percent lower odds of foreclosure. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year alone, HOC educated 168 households and created 55 successful homeowners. Of the 55 homes purchased, HOC assisted 38 households with down payment and closing cost assistance.

“Buying a home is the biggest investment you’re going to make,” said Graves. “The thought can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The resources and information you receive from the workshop is invaluable as you work toward the dream of homeownership.
