Section III stars compete

Camden’s Elizabeth Lucason posted the 19th fastest time in a field of 125runners.

As an eighth-grader in 2017, Camden’s Elizabeth Lucason posted the 19th fastest time in a field of 125 runners at the New York State cross country championships.

Now a freshman, Lucason made even more noise in her second appearance at the state tournament.

On Saturday, after finishing 2nd at the 2018 Section III championships a week before, Lucason blazed her way to a Top 5 finish in Class B.

Lucason tackled the 5K circuit at Sunken Meadow State Park in 19:10.6 for the final spot in the Top 5.

Morgan Lucason, Elizabeth’s

older sister, returned to Sunken Meadow for her fourth consecutive state championship appearance. After finishing 52nd with a 22:12.5 at last year’s state tourney, Morgan shaved nearly two minutes off her time, working the 5K to a 20:28.3, good for 38th place.

Camden teammate Haley Hinds joined the Lucasons on Saturday for her first ever state tourney, posting a 20:32.0 for 44th place.

Joining the Camden trio in representing Section III at the state tournament, Oneida freshman Madison Mack was also a newcomer to Saturday’s race. Like her Camden counterparts, Mack also placed in the top 50 percentile, working the 3.1 mile course to a 20:40.6, good for 50th place.

At the Class C level, Vernon-Verona- Sherrill standout Delaney Brewer continued her impressive season.

The Red Devil junior used a 19:46.9 to secure a 5th place finish in the 130-person Class C field, improving on her Top 10, 9th place finish in the 2017 state tourney.
