Local schools compete at Oneida

Couture sets new mark, Robinson has strong showing

Friday’s early afternoon downpours gave way to chilly, blustery conditions for the 39 teams that participat­ed in the Oneida Invitation­al, but even Mother Nature could not slow down Utica Proctor.

The Proctor girls finished with a 91.50 for first place in the team rankings, outpacing second place finishers Canastota and Camden, who tied at 63. Vernon-VeronaSher­rill followed with a 53.50 for fourth. Chittenang­o closed the afternoon with 10 points for 12th place, and hosting Oneida came in at 14th with nine points.

The Proctor boys collected 96.25 points for first place in the team rankings. Cazenovia took second place with a 74. Camden used a 41 to move into fourth place for the event, while VernonVero­na-Sherrill secured eighth place with 35 points. Chittenang­o closed in 9th with 30 points, and hosting Oneida collected 11.25 points for 14th overall. Hamilton, 15th place, and Canastota, 17th place, closed with totals of 9 and 6.25, respective­ly.

On the girls’ side, Devin Lee Robinson played a big role in Canastota’s second place finish, ripping off a 12.73 100m for first place in the event. Teammate Laura Suppa gave the Raiders two more first place finishes, first in the 100mhurdle­swith a 16.78, and later with a second place finish in the pole vault via a 9-00.00. When the two combined forces with Alexandria Phillips and McKenzie Leahey in the 4x100, the results were just as good. The Raiders took first place in the event as the Canastota quartet combined for a 52.13. Robinson added another second place finish in the field side of things with a 16-03.00

in the long jump.

Chittenang­o secured a first place finish in the 400m, thanks to a 1:02,21 from Maryanna Garcia.

Camden’s Elizabeth Lucason worked a first place finish in the 1,500m via a 4:47.88. In the 4x800m, Lucason teamed with sister Elizabeth Lucason, Catherine Seidl, and Haley Hinds to post a 10:23.98, good for first place and thirty seconds faster than the next relay team.

VVS captured the 400m hurdleswhe­n freshmanBr­ianne Millson outpaced all other athletes with a 1:12.70, beating out second place finisher Corinne Bandera’s, of Marcellus, 1:14.00.

Both VVS and Camden were all over the 2,000m steeplecha­se. VVS’ Delaney Brewer captured the event with a 7:46.10. Second place finisher Seidl, a Camden Blue Devil, also closed in under eight minutes, posting a 7:55.32.

Couture blew by the competitio­n with a 21.9 in the 200m for first place. The mark also serves as Couture’s personal best and is a new VVS and Oneida Invitation­al record, but the Red Devil senior didn’t stop there. Couture also took first in the 400m, clocking in at 49.90 to just beat out Utica Proctor’s Jaylin Roman, who posted a 49.95.

For the boys, Couture also played a role in VVS’ next first place finish. Teamed with Dion Putaski, Terrell Rainwater, and Spencer Walker, Couture and company raced to a 3:38.01 in the 4x400m relay, beating out the next closest quartet by more than five seconds.

In the 4x800m relay, it was Chittenang­o’s turn to shine. Ersilio Cerminaro, Caleb Prenoveau, Dylan Price and Nathan Lampman worked an 8:27.21 for first place. Camden closed the event in second place, courtesy of an 8:44.36 supplied by Simon Seidl, Kyle Kirk, Jeremy Plumley, and Ben Carver.

Chittenang­o’s Dave Gratien gave the Bears a second place finish in the 1600m, finishing in 4:49.56. Fellow Bear Jeremy Warters was also able to boast a second place finish after closing pentathlon with a 2,562, trailing only Rome Free Academy’s Anthony Coney’s 2,783.

Hamilton’s Erik Geier secured a second place finish in the 110m hurdles, posting a 16.01 clip, trailing first place finisher Julio Baker (15.99) by two hundredths of a second.

Camden’s Josh Mayden was the 400m champion with a 1:01.65, just beating out Cazenovia senior Justin Gagnon’s 1:02.25.

Cazenovia fared even better in the 3,000m steeplecha­se, where Jared Smith led all runners with a 10:41.78. Camden’s Simon Seidl finished third with a 10:45.84.

Cazenovia secured first in the triple jump as well, thanks to a 43-01.00 from Ray Satchwell. The Lakers added another second place finish in the high jump where Dalton Sevier posited a 6-02.00, trailing first place Kwamere White’s, of Henniger, 6-06.00. Angelo Anotto fared well in the discus, launching a 127-03, good for second place.

Luke Lombardi helped hosting Oneida secure its first event with a 14-00.00 pole vault. The next closest competitor, Slater Constantin­e from Sauquoit Valley, was three feet behind Lombardi with an 11-00.00.
