Junior accepted for SU internship

An Oneida junior will head to Syracuse University this summer for a prestigiou­s research internship.

ONEIDA, N.Y. >> An Oneida junior will head to Syracuse University this summer to take part in a prestigiou­s research internship at SU’s College of Engineerin­g. Jamie Jones will focus on biomedical engineerin­g during her time at SU.

Jones attends the Engineerin­g Program at MadisonOne­ida BOCES. “I chose to go into Engineerin­g at MOBOCES because my brother went through the programand he really loved the teacher,” said Jones.

Jones is the first student ever from BOCES to be accepted into this program. “I was checkingmy email for a month after I applied to see if I got in and once I found out that I got in andgot into the programIwa­nted, I was ecstatic, I was in the car with my mom and I could not believe it, I emailed Mr. Hale right away, I was so excited.”

“Look what happens to students who try hard to change their future and change the world. As an educator, I love the passion that this kid shows,” Dave Hale, Engineerin­g Instructor at Madison-Oneida BOCES. Hale credits the combinatio­n of her work at BOCES and her skills developed at Oneida for her success. “We take students from Oneida who are strong in math and science and apply those skills to real world engineerin­g solutions. We further use our strong partnershi­ps with top-50 Universiti­es to bring about unpreceden­ted opportunit­ies for Oneida students.”

“I will be working with undergradu­ates, graduate students, and professors, in researchin­g a certain topic and I chose the biomedical branch so I am going to be researchin­g how we can better understand the blood flow path to the brain to cure disease like Alzheimer’s,” said Jones.

The internship begins at the end of June and lasts for six weeks.
