VVS, Oneida, Hamilton reach quarterfinals in state tournament

While most of the Dispatch-area teams competing in the boys tennis state qualifiers did so in the doubles realm, one Tri-Valley senior came within inches of reaching the state tournament.

Vernon-Verona- Sherrill senior Jacob Starke powered his way to the Section III singles semifinals to secure a fourth place finish in qualifying play.

Following a first round bye, Starke cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sauquoit Valley’s Luke Stayton punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. There, the Red Devil senior faced a more difficult challenge in Holland Patent’s Christopher Gaige but prevailed 7-5, 2- 6, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals to take on Mexico’s Joe Ocker. Ocker got the best of Starke 7-6, 6-4 in a tightly fought battle to advance to the finals while Starke was sent to the consolation round, where he fell to Baldwinsville’s Antonio Marsallo 6-2, 6-3 to place fourth in Section III singles play.

In doubles action, Oneida had a pair of duos advance past the first round of the qualifiers. Drew Hicks and Seth O’Connell blanked LaFayette’s Brandon Benjamin and Mason Shute in an opening roundmatchup before falling to eventual second place finishers Essex Glowacki and Dhruv Nanavati of Jamesville-Dewitt.

O’Connell’s teammates and Hicks’ brothers Aidan and Ajay fared better in the second round, taking down F-M tandem Ben FarberMcEntee and Andy Sun 7-6, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, but fell in that round to third place finishers and states-bound Matthew Mannara and James Plunkett, 2-6, 3-6.

Hamilton’s Henry Crespi and Brice Sharp-Ballinger knocked off Cooperstown’s Lindsey Trosset and Bradley Weldon 7-5, 7-6 in the second round of doubles play before falling to Fayetteville-Manlius duo Rohan Dhawan and Riley Ma 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters.
