SHERRILL, N.Y. >> Sherrill closed its District 5 regular season with a home game at Noyes Park on Thursday.

Unlike the first three games of the homestand in which Post 230 scored wins over the likes Fort Plain, Ilion and Helmuth-Ingalls, not much went right for Sherrill in a 9-2 defeat to New Hartford.

New Hartford starter Nathaniel Bennett kept the Sherrill offense in check, holding Post 230 to two runs - both plated in the final inning of the contest - on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts for the win.

Post 1376 was perhapsmore impressive at the plate, belting out 19 hits for nine runs. Dan Owen went 4-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the New Hartford charge. Tyler Moran and Andrew Fink added three hits a piece for the visitors in the victory.

Trenton Wong came off the bench for a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to account for the Post 230 scoring.

New Hartford took control of the contest courtesy of a four-run first. Gavin Weaver started things off by reaching on an error and Paul Circelli followed with a base hit. Riley Nagle sent both run runners home in the next at-bat via a ground-rule double down the right field line for a 2-0 visitor lead. Owen followed with a homer to give his side a 4-0 lead after one.

Sherrill’s tough luck continued in the top of the second when Weaver scored on a 15-foot base hit that stalled in no-man’s land just inside the third base line for a 5-0 visitor advantage.

New Hartford grew its lead to 7- 0 in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Tyler Moran and Andrew Fink.

Post 230 put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom half of the fifth after Ryan Shantal singled and Jake Horodnick reached on an error, but Bennett retired the next two batters to keep Sherrill off the board.

Then, in the top of the seventh, New Hartford padded two more runs to its lead on a fortuitous onehop base hit to the right field gap by Fink.

Sherrill broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh onWong’s tworun double before Bennett closed the door for the 9-2 New Hartford victory.
