Cazenovia’s Lindsey Lawson nets 1,000th point in win over Madison.

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. >> In the first game of the season, Cazenovia forward Lindsey Lawson achieved another milestone.

Weeks removed from signing her National Letter of Intent to suit up for the Harvard Crimson, Lawson joined the 1,000 point club in a 48-21 win over the Madison Blue Devils.

The Laker standout has bigger, team- oriented plans in mind, however.

“We’re looking to put another sectional banner up this year,” Lawson said.

Lawson finished the game with 11 points, while teammate Julia Bauder led all scorers with 12.

Madison’s Maryellen Coleman paced the Blue Devils with seven points on the evening despite drawing the difficult assignment of containing Lawson on the defensive end. Jordan Mayne followed with six points for Madison.

The first quarter was all Cazenovia. Molly Brown got the Lakers going with back-toback buckets before Josie Avery sank a shot from beyond the arc to help the Lakers take a 9-0 advantage with just over twominutes to play in the quarter. Lawson closed the frame with an and-1 play as the Lakers led 10-0 after one.

Cazenovia continued to pull away in the second quarter, extending the lead to 16-0 before Coleman sunk a 3-pointer to get the Blue Devils on the board. Lawson answered with a baseline move for a lay-in for the Lakers. On Cazenovia’s next offensive possession, Lawson grabbed an offensive board and fed Bauder for a trip to the line, where the senior guard knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to 20-3. Then, with 1:25 left in the second quarter, Lawson surpassed the 1,000 point mark, beating a defender on the baseline for an easy layup.

“Just another bucket,” Lawson said of the achievement. “Plan to add many more this season.”

“I thought she came out like all of us in the first game. Everyone wanted to score and do everything possible in the first four minutes,” Nieman added of Lawson. “I thought she settled down and had a great second half. She does a lot of things that you don’t see all the time: the blocked shots, the rebounds, the of
