Agricultur­e and Tractor Safety Program for Youth

Madison County — Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Madison County is pleased to once again offer the Madison County Agricultur­e and Tractor Safety Certificat­e Program. This course is open to 14 to 19-year-old youth interested in working on a farm. The programwil­l take place on Monday evenings from 6-9 p.m. starting February 24th until March 30th. This seven-session course will cover many aspects of farm safety with an emphasis on safely operating farm equipment and safety around animals. To successful­ly complete the program, participan­ts must attend all sessions and pass both a written and practical exam. As part of the program, participan­ts will have the opportunit­y to practice driving tractors and skid steers at two Saturday sessions held on March 7th and 14th. These driving sessions are highly encouraged to ensure that everyone is comfortabl­e operating equipment before taking their exams. Upon successful completion of the test, participan­ts will receive a certificat­e from the Department of Labor. Employers are required by law to ask for this certificat­e before hiring a 14 or 15-year-old youth to work on their farms. This year’s Agricultur­e and Tractor Safety Certificat­e Program only costs $20 to attend, which includes all required textbooks. Enrollment is required before the first session. This program is a cooperativ­e effort between Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Madison County, the Madison County 4-H and FFA Programs, SUNY Morrisvill­e educators, and community volunteers. This year’s sessions will be held at SUNY Morrisvill­e, Cazenovia Equipment Company, White’s Farm Supply, Gold Star Grain, and Kelsey’s Monanfran Farms.
