Lavish Range Rover delivers style in Sport HST

- By Marc Grasso Boston Herald

The British luxury brand Land Rover has developed off-road, boxy sport utility vehicles for more than 70 years.

Despite the outdated complaints about their endless list of malfunctions and horrific mechanical and electrical recalls, Land Rover has pressed on by building value, demonstrating class and delivering luxury to the upperclass consumer. Their line of SUVS is characterized by one key word: Style.

Our tester, the limited edition Range Rover Sport HST, delivered in Indus Silver and with a black panoramic roof, is one gorgeous Ute. It boasts great design, fantastic sight lines, Land Rover-embossed red calipers and 22-inch, 5-split spoke gloss black wheels.

Inside, the Touch Pro Dual-screen infotainment system is easy to use, but could use some technological updates as it operates mostly via touch screen and features smaller buttons. The upscale red leather and suede-insert interior is amazing; it’s one of the nicest interiors; exceptionally comfortable in all five seats. The steering wheel and shifter were also cloth and really comfortable to operate. Finally, the 19-speaker Meridian surround sound system was flawless and sounded like you were at the center of a concert — a $4,200 option.

Moving our Range Rover Sport HST is an inline sixcylinder turbocharged engine boasting 395 horsepower and 406 ft.-lb. of torque. Although it went 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, I didn’t feel that it was as torquey as the BMW X3 M-competition or Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, but its ability to go offroad and curb weight over 500 pounds more than the competition makes the Sport HST really a great all-around SUV.

The Range Rover Sport’s upscale clientele demand luxury and status. Flawless, spacious, powerful and one of the nicest-looking SUVS on the market ... mission accomplished.

I mean, let’s be honest, it has a refrigerator in the center console. That is a second-to-none feature in my opinion!
