Madison County receives federal funds for emergency food and shelter programs

WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. » Madison County organizati­ons that qualify may have the opportunit­y to apply for federal grants to assist in emergency food and shelter programs.

Madison County was awarded funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (Dhs)/federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, according to the United Way of Greater Oneida (UWGO).

Madison County has been chosen to receive $29,821.00 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. Additional­ly, Madison County will receive $42,516.00 for the CARES Act.

The spending period for both of these grants begins June 1, 2020.

According to the UWGO, the selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representa­tives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; The Jewish Federation­s of North America; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; and, United Way Worldwide.

A local board, made up of representa­tives from service agencies in the area, will determine how the funds awarded to Madison County are to be distribute­d among the local service agencies that run emergency food and shelter programs in the area. This board is also responsibl­e for recommendi­ng agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

1) be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government

2) be eligible to receive federal funds

3) have an accounting system 4) practice nondiscrim­ination 5) have demonstrat­ed the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs

6) and, if they are a private voluntary organizati­on, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Madison County has distribute­d Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds previously to Caz Cares, St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, Catholic Charities/madison County, Karing Kitchen, Madison County Office for the Aging, Community Action Partnershi­p for Madison County, and the Morrisvill­e Community Church Food Pantry.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Denise Laube, P.O. Box 648, Oneida, NY 13421 and/or call 315-363-5779 for an applicatio­n. The deadline for applicatio­ns to be received is Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
