Life is grand with BMW 840i Gran Coupe

- By Marc Grasso Boston Herald

The Ultimate Driving Machine does it again.

Not sure how many times we can drool over a vehicle, but when a BMW tester shows up, we salivate.

This time, a new shape of the 840i Gran Coupe appeared and let’s start with a “wow.”

The Gran Coupe is a four-seat luxury sedan that boasts tons of standard features as well as optional sporty ones. The sedan/ coupe combo makes the Gran Coupe something special.

Our rear-wheel-drive tester displayed a punch, packing a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 engine with 335 horsepower and 368 ft.-lb. of torque. Optioned up you can select the 4.4L V8 that is an absolute monster. Both versions offer five drive modes, from Eco showing 29 mpg, to Sport Plus, which throats the dual exhaust and actually sounds like it’s ready to eat up anything in its path at around 18 mpg.

The Gran Coupe style is one that takes some getting used too but certainly has a look. Its long snout is sleek and low while its rear end is upright and rounded similar to our 2019 tester, its convertible all-wheel-drive counterpart, the M850xi.

At the price point, the completion is clearly the Audi A7, Mercedes-benz CLS and Porsche Panamera. Our eight-speed automatic came in at over 4,200 pounds — average for this class.

As you already know from previous tests, our love for BMW is real. BMW’S vehicles are built around the driver first, hence their motto “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” Exceptional seat comfort, stylish interiors and an easy-to-navigate infotainment system helps make BMW a leader in technology and luxury.

Our Mineral White exterior paired with a gorgeous Night Sky Blue/black two-tone interior was flawless, I couldn’t come up with one idea or alternative layout to make the vehicle better as a whole. The 8 series Gran Coupe is certainly eye-opening; its added M-package and 20-inch wheels make it more appealing than any vehicle on the road with its style, performance, technology and safety options.

The Gran Coupe is special and deserves to be driven by someone who likes to be noticed.
