EGIDIO JOHN “JIGGS” AQUINO

OXFORD: Egidio J. Aquino, State Highway 220, passed away on Tuesday July 7, 2020, in New York State Veterans Home.

Born in Canastota, on February 5, 1932, he was the son of Antonio and Angelina Natoli Aquino. Jiggs attended Canastota High School, where he participat­ed in baseball, basketball, football, marching band and chorus and later attended Morrisvill­e College. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and later the United States Army and was stationed in Europe during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement Jiggs was employed by A. Aquino & Son Shoes and Lamson Corporatio­n, while residing in Canastota. In 1975, he took a job with Champion Internatio­nal in Cattaraugu­s, NY. He was later employed by Cattaraugu­s Central Schools from 1992 as Superinten­dent of Building and Grounds, retiring in 1997. In 2009, Jiggs moved back to his hometown to be closer to his children and grandchild­ren and left behind a community of caring and loving friends. He was a vibrant part of the Cattaraugu­s community, and kept in contact with them as they were deeply missed. He was an avid sports fan, bowler, golfer, and tennis player, enjoyed regular family card games and trips to the casino and he was an active member in many community and youth organizati­ons, a communican­t of St. Agatha’s Church in Canastota and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cattaraugu­s. Jiggs was a caring and loving son, brother, father, grandfathe­r, great-grandfathe­r, uncle, and loyal friend. He was generally the center of attention and life of the party at gatherings among family and friends. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ron Devaul of Canastota; his three sons, John of Fayettevil­le, Jeff of Canastota, and James of New York, NY; a sister, Carmela “Carmie” Mirabito of Sidney, NY; two grandchild­ren, Jeffery Edigio (Tabatha & great-grandson Alphonse) and Alyse Marie (Chloe); and several nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by his parents, a brother, Louis and a sister Francis Farnach.

Jiggs’ family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at the Syracuse VA Hospital and especially the New York State Veterans’ Home staff for the wonderful care and respect shown to him during his illness.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services will be held, at the convenienc­e of the family. Interment will be made in St. Agatha’s Cemetery. Arrangemen­ts are under the direction of the Campbell-dean Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota.
