Harvest Time in Central New York

- By Myron Thurston III Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County

Did you know that it is already harvesting time in Madison County? We may think of harvest time as being in the fall, nestled between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, but it actually starts in the early summer when produce like green beans and strawberries become available at local farmers’ mar and roadside stands. Other farmers raise or grow things like beef, mushrooms, and maple syrup which are available year-round. Many of our local farmers’ markets are open for business. You will need to wear a mask at the market and you may find items bundled for you in a slightly different way but it will still be the same fresh and tasty goods that you have come to expect at our area farmers’ markets. We currently have four markets that are operational in Madison County. You can find additional information on our website at http :// madison county c ce. org/ ag-economic-development/buy-local/ find-a-farmers market. • Farmers’ Market at Cottage Lawn Tuesdays from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. 435 Main Street in Oneida, NY • Morrisville Farmers Market kets (sponsored by CONYEA) Wednesdays from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. CCE Madison, 100 Eaton Street, Morrisville, NY • Village of Hamilton Farmers’ Market Saturdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Village Green, Hamilton • Cazenovia Farmers’ Market Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Albany St., Cazenovia, NY Several vendors are selling the diverse goods produced by our Madison County farmers, such as 20 East in Cazenovia, The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed’s in Erieville, Parry’s in Hamilton and Good Nature Brewing Company in Hamilton. Visiting the website of these locations will take you to information on what they provide and how many farms are represented in either their storefronts or online stores. We also have resources to help you find opportunities to order online for those that do not want to visit a store due to concerns about COVID-19. We have partnered with several area farmers to provide Curbside at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County and we have partnered with the Madison County Planning Department on Buy Madison County. • Curbside at Cornell http:// madison county c ce. org/ agriculture/ag-economic-development/ buy-local/ curb side-at- cornell cooperative-extension-of-madison-county • Buy Madison County https://www. buy madison countyny. com/ think-shop-buy-local during-c ovid -19/ You may be interested in getting out into Madison County and driving to visit farm stands or road side stands all over the county in towns such as Hamilton or Chittenango.
