Tenney holds lead in 22nd Congressional race
Absentee ballots to decide race
CENTRAL NEWYORK » The race for Representative of NY’S 22nd Congressional District was closely watched as incumbent Anthony Brindisi ( D, WF) fought to hold his seat and former representative Claudia Tenney ( R, C) fought to get hers back. Libertarian Keith Price Jr. also had a foot in the race.
With the unofficial election night results tallied on the NYS Board of Elections website, the race seems too close to call.
Before absentee ballot votes have been counted, Brindisi is at 111,461 votes, Tenney at 139,883. Price came out with 5,467 votes so far.
Tenney has confidence that her campaign will prevail with this preexisting lead. She shared the following statement:
“Based on early returns, I am confident that our campaign will prevail. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring support for our campaign. I want to thank our volunteers and supporters for all their hard work and the voters of the 22nd District for their confidence. Voters here know that our country and our communities are worth fighting for, and I will carry that fight to Washington. America and Upstate New York need champions that will always put the people first. I pledge to always put Central New York and the Southern Tier first.
The work to make up state New York and the United States of America Great Again has only just begun.”
Brindisi has not conceded the election yet, however.
“Regardless of if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, an Independent, if you voted for me or not, we are all Americans first. As the count continues, we are in for a long couple of weeks. It is important that the people of NY- 22 have their voice heard and send a representative to Congress who shows up, works with both parties, and stands up to anyone on behalf of this community. It is the honor of a lifetime to serve you in Congress,” he stated.
He reminded voters that the race in 2018 was not called until Nov. 20, and that several absentee ballots still need to be counted.
Price shared comments on his Facebook page, voicing his pride for getting 2% of the vote on a party line that has averaged around 1% in other congressional races across the state.
He added, “To all my friends in liberty, those who voted for me, and those who wish they could... I amthankful and grateful for each and every vote I received. I’ll never be able to personally thank everyone for everything they did for me during this campaign, you know who you are, so Thank You!”
