Both Syracuse men’s and women’s basketball grab wins

- Men’s Basketball

Quincy Guerrier scored a career- high 27points with 11rebounds. Alan Griffin tied a career- high 24points with 10rebounds.

Quincy Guerrier scored a career- high 27 points with 11 rebounds, Alan Griffin tied a careerhigh 24 points with 10 rebounds, and Syracuse beat Buffalo 107- 96 in overtime Saturday night.

Griffin’s basket 15 seconds into overtime gave Syracuse ( 6- 1) the lead for good. The Orange outscored Buffalo 20- 9 in the extra session.

Buffalo ( 3- 3) took a 19- 17 lead with 13: 28 remaining in the first half and led for most of the contest. The Bulls led 48- 37 at halftime and got the lead as high as 57- 41 on Jayvon Graves’ layup with 16: 34 left before the Orange rallied.

Guerrier’s three- point play with 76 seconds left in regulation gave the Orange an 85- 82 lead.

Ronaldo Segu’s deep 3- pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation tied it at 87 for Buffalo. Following a Syracuse timeout, Josh Mballa stole it from the Orange’s Marek Dolezaj and threw an outlet pass to a streaking Graves, who eluded one defender before having his la

yup attempt blocked off the backboard by a high- flying Griffin trailing the play.

Guerrier recovered the ball for Syracuse and got a clean look from half court, but missed as time expired to send it to the extra session.

Buddy Boeheim added 22 points for Syracuse. It was the first time that the Orange had three- or- more players score 20 or more since the six- overtime game against Connecticu­t in the 2009 Big East Tournament.

Mballa ledbuffalo­with a career- high 27 points on 11of- 18 shooting before fouling out in overtime. Graves scored 22 points, Jeenathan Williams 19, Segu 13 and Keishawn Brewton 10.

day despite the absence of star point guard Tiana Mangakahia.

Mangakahia sat out with a left foot injury after getting hurt against Miami on Dec. 10, Mangakahia, who missed last seasonwhil­e being treated for breast cancer, was limited to three points in the loss to North Carolina on Thursday.

Women’s Basketball

Freshman Kiara Fisher started at point guard and scored three points but her 6- foot- 7 classmate picked up the slack.

Cardoso scored 14 points in the first quarter as the Eagles raced to a 31- 15 lead.

BC got within 44- 35 by scoring the last nine points of the first half but Syracuse scored the first six of the thirdquart­er. Twice late in the third quarter, the Eagles cut the deficit to single figures but the lead was double figures throughout the fourth quarter.

Kiara Lewis scored 20 points, 14 in the second

half, with eight assists for Syracuse ( 5- 1, 2- 1 Atlantic Coast Conference) and Priscilla Williams added 14, 11 after the break.

Cardoso made her first eight shots and the Orange finished at 54% for the game. Emily Engstler grabbed 11 rebounds and Digna Strautmane 10 as Syracuse had a 42- 35 edge on the boards. The Orange had 23 turnovers.

Taylor Soule scored 20 points and Ford 19 with 12 rebounds for the Eagles ( 43, 0- 3), who shot 30%.

On Pause

Syracuse’s most recent opponent, tested positive for COVID- 19. Additional­ly, at this time, all basketball- related activities are paused and contact tracing is underway. Syracuse athletics is working closely with Onondaga County

Health Department­s, New York State public health officials and the ACC Medical Advisory Group, to determine appropriat­e next steps. The team is adhering to all public health guidelines.
