OT goal lifts women’s hockey over St. Lawrence

HAMILTON » Behind first-year Kalty Kaltounkov­a’s game-winning goal in overtime, the No. 5 Colgate women’s hockey team remains undefeated in ECAC play with a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence. With the win, the Raiders are 9-1-1 and have extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.

The Raiders dominated the first period offensivel­y, which was highlighte­d by back-to-back goals from junior Eleri Mackay. With the game scoreless, E. Mackay received a pass from junior Delani Mackay in the slot and scored to give the Raiders the 1-0 advantage.

Not even two minutes later, sophomore Sydney Bard passed the puck to E. Mackay who snuck it into the lower left part of the net to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Just as the first period was about to end, the Saints scored with 20 seconds remaining in the period to cut the lead to 2-1. At the end of the first period, the Raiders led in shots 13-4.

The second period saw the Raiders plagued by penalties, as Colgate had five penalties throughout the period. Fortunatel­y for the Raiders, St. Lawrence was unable to score any

power play goals to tie the game and the contest remained at 2-1 when the period ended.

The third period was incredibly fast-paced as both the Raiders and Saints had multiple shots on goal. Colgate outshot St. Lawrence 14-5 in the third period, but the Saints tied the contest with 1:40 left in the period to make the score 2-2.

As overtime hockey started, the Saints received a big penalty to give the Raiders a 4-on-3 advantage for two minutes, which led sophomore Danielle Serdachny to pass to first-year Kalty Kaltounkov­a who scored from the right faceoff zone to give the Raiders the 3-2 overtime win.

Junior Eleri Mackay recorded her second multipoint night of the season and now has four goals of the season. Sophomore Danielle Serdachny now has a five-game point streak (4G, 4A) with her one assist in tonight’s contest. She now has scored at least one point in nine of the 11 games this season. Producing two power play goals, the Raiders went 2-for-4 with the man advantage, while also holding St. Lawrence 1-for-6 on the power play. The Raiders won 71.6 percent of their faceoffs, which included junior Delani Mackay winning 87.5 percent of her faceoffs. Colgate outshot the Saints on goal 38-18 throughout the contest, including a game-high 14 shots on goal in the third period. The Raiders extend its unbeaten streak to seven games and remains undefeated in ECAC play with a 5-0 record.

Colgate holds a 9-1-1 record and remains undefeated in the ECAC at 5-00. The Raiders will travel to play St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 in Canton, N.Y.
