MARY JANE ALVAREZ

Mary Jane Alvarez, 92, of Boonville, formerly of Oneida, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville where she had a resident since August 19, 2015.

She was born on March 26, 1928, in Oneida, the daughter of Frank and Charlotte Mcglynn Newcomb. Mary Jane was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1946.

On February 14, 1953, she was united in marriage to Paul X. Thorna in St. Joseph’s Church. Mr. Thorna passed away on February 17, 1968. On December 22, 1984, Mary Jane was united in marriage to Ralph W. Alvarez in West Palm Beach, FL. Mr. Alvarez passed away on June 30, 2002. Mary Jane was the owner and operator of Village Boutique in Oneida Castle for many years, retiring in 1983.

She was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Church and their Altar and Rosary Society.

Mary Jane loved to travel especially with her daughter, Sandy.

Surviving are her children, Paul D. Thorna, of Oneida, and Terri A. Thorna (Kevin Zeigler), of Boonville; a sister, Nancy Ginter, of Oneida; a sister-in-law, Jane Newcomb, of Clinton; four grandchildren, Katie Roach, Connor Roach, Scott Weaver II, and Stephanie M. Clapper; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Jane was predeceased by a daughter, Sandy L. Thorna Henjum on August 19, 2006; and her siblings, Tom Newcomb, Babe Newcomb, and Betty Newcomb. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 121 St. Joseph’s Place, Oneida, where the Rev. Nathan Brooks will ofciate. Interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Oneida. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Jane’s memory to St. Joseph’s Church Memorial Fund, 121 St. Joseph’s Place, Oneida, NY, 13421.
