CANASTOTA- Robert C. Smith, 82, Lamb Avenue, died Tuesday, February 23, 2021, in Oneida Healthcare, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Canastota, on November 16, 1938, he was the son of Charles and Margaret Cronk Smith. A lifelong resident of Canastota, Bob was a graduate of Canastota High School, Class of 1956 and then served with the United States Navy, aboard the USS Fred T. Berry for four years during the Viet Nam War era and was involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis. While in the Navy, he met Lynn Hartling at a USO dance in Boston and they were married in Malden, Massachusetts on April 28, 1963. Marilyn died on August 3, 2009. Prior to his retirement, Bob was employed for many years with Feldmeier Equipment in Syracuse. He was a communicant of St. Agatha’s Church and a member of the church’s Bereavement Committee and Adoration Society, a charter member of the LA Mens Club, a member of Trout Unlimited and the American Legion, Charles Miller Post # 140, enjoyed yshing, recently began to enjoy golf, was a loyal SU basketball fan and loved the sports and activities that his grandchildren were involved in. Surviving are his two daughters, Kristin L. Smith of Canastota and Kara Smith of Tucson, Arizona; his two sons, Charles R. Smith of Washington, D.C. and Richard S. (Stephanie) Smith of Chittenango; his four grandchildren, Brenna, Jacob, Duncan and Cooper Smith; his sister, Julie Smith of Brookline, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10: 30 AM, Tuesday from St. Agatha’s Church, Canastota, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Christopher Ballard, pastor. Interment, with full military honors, will be made in St. Agatha’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the Campbell-dean Funeral Home, Inc., 300 South Peterboro Street, Canastota, 4-7 PM, Monday.
