Hellen Rose Miller, 89, of 6549 Tuttle Road, Canastota, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at The Grand, Chittenang­o. She was born on July 28, 1931, in Plattsburg­h, NY, the daughter of the late Fritjoff “Fred” and Mary (Garrow) Johansen. Hellen spent her early years in Plattsburg­h, attending the Plattsburg­h schools. She moved to the Munnsville area in 1940, and attended the Stockbridg­e school. Hellen has lived in Clockville since 1947.

She enjoyed playing various musical instrument­s, especially the piano, organ and clarinet. Hellen, also, enjoyed being a mother, and sewing, cooking, baking, quilting, painting ceramics, and spending time with her family.

Hellen was instrument­al in establishi­ng the Oneida Madison ARC, and remained very involved for many years.

She married Bernard J. Miller on November 23, 1947, at her home in Clockville. Surviving besides her husband Bernard are: one son, William Garrow Miller and Patricia Carr of Peterboro; two granddaugh­ters, Terri Lynn Stoner (the daughter she never had) and Kenneth Ballard, and Jennifer Lee Miller; two great grandchild­ren, Michael Shanahan, II, and Ashlee Shanahan; one sister, Peggy Loomis of N. Carolina; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hellen was predecease­d by her beloved son, George Porter Miller on March 21, 2020; three brothers, John Johansen, Edward Johansen, and Fred Johansen; and two sisters, June Burleson, and Jeanne Ellis. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Face coverings and social distancing are required. Private funeral services will be held at the convenienc­e of the family, with the Rev. William M. Wilcox ofciating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota.
