Colgate ends spring football season

- By Staff Reports Sports@oneidadispatch.com

Colgate Athletics announced Wednesday that the football team is unable to play Saturday’s game against Holy Cross because of a positive Covid-19 test within the program’s Tier 1 personnel.

The Raiders were scheduled to play their third spring regular season game and first home contest this Saturday against Holy Cross.

“I feel for the players,” Colgate head coach Dan Hunt said. “They sacrificed an incredible amount in order to have this spring season. They never complained and never brought less than 100 percent every day. With the pod structure, we still were alive to play in the title game.

“We now begin the process of preparing for the 2021 season, which is right around the corner.”

Colgate finishes its season 0-2 and begins offseason preparations for the 2021 fall campaign. The Raiders open Sept. 4 at Boston College.

NCAA Tier 1 Definition: Tier 1 is the highest exposure tier and consists of individuals for whom physical distancing and face coverings are not possible or effective during athletic training or competition. Examples of relevant individuals include student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.

Colgate Women’s Basketball Program Update

The Colgate University Department of Athletics announced on April 8, 2021 that William Cleary has resigned from his position as head women’s basketball coach.

“We thank Coach Cleary for his service to our university and department,” said Colgate Vice President and Director of Athletics Nicki Moore. “We wish him the very best moving forward.”

In five seasons as head coach of the Raiders, Cleary was 49-79, finishing the 2019-20 season with a 19-11 record. Three student-athletes earned All-patriot League honors during Cleary’s tenure. Colgate’s women’s basketball student-athletes excelled in the classroom, including a 100 percent graduation rate and perfect NCAA APR scores of 1,000.

A national search for a successor begins immediately.

Women’s Soccer Postseason Bound

Talk about a roller coaster ride.

Needing a win to survive, Lyna Schaffer was the double-overtime hero and Colgate left West Point with a 1-0 victory over previously-unbeaten Army and a Patriot League tournament berth.

The suddenly trending Raiders enter the postseason unbeaten in their last three games, including back-to-back shutouts, while outscoring opponents 5-0 over the last two matches. Colgate extends its Patriot League record streak of consecutive Patriot League tournament appearances to 13. Yep, lucky No. 13.

Colgate (3-3-1, 2-2 PL North) earned the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League North and squares off with topseeded Boston University in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Wednesday’s winner advances to the Patriot League championship on Saturday against either Navy or Loyola. The championship is hosted by the remaining team with the highest regular-season point total.
