MORRISVILLE, NY >> Head football coach Ed Raby announced the addition of Chris Maxwell to the SUNY Morrisville staff for the upcoming season, as assistant coach of the linebacker unit while also serving as the program’s video coordinator.

“Chris came highly recommended to this position,” said Raby. “His experience coaching on the offensive side of the ball will greatly enhance our linebackers football IQ and ability.”

Maxwell comes to Morrisville from Waynesburg University where he served two seasons on staff overseeing the wide receivers. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, he oversaw recruiting in West Virginia, New York and Michigan and assisted in player development.

Prior to his time at Waynesburg, Maxwell spent a year on the sidelines at Slippery Rock University, a Division II member, where he earned his degree in education: physical activity and fitness management. Maxwell worked primarily with linebackers and special teams during his time with the Rock.

Maxwell earned his master of science degree in coaching and sport education from West Virginia University.

Raffaele Spagnola joins the Mustang football staff for his

first official season in the fall 2021, overseeing the SUNY Morrisville wide receiving unit.

Spagnola, who joined the program in the spring, comes to Morrisville from Keansburg High in New Jersey, where he spent the last five seasons as the assistant varsity football coach and junior varsity defensive coordinator.

“Coach Spagnola did a great job for us in the spring, and was very deserving of permanent position on our staff,” said head coach Ed Raby. “We are excited to have him coaching our wide receivers.”

Spagnola returns alongside two Mustang mainstays in Walter Burks and John Pluta. Burks returns to the sidelines to coach the strong secondary unit, while Pluta returns to coach the defensive line.

“We are thrilled to have Coach Burks and Coach Pluta back in the Mustang green this fall,” Raby said. “

These guys have a deep connection to Morrisville; with over 20 years of coaching for the Mustangs combined. They both bring valuable experience and leadership to our program!”

During Spagnola’s time with Keansburg, he was involved in five different position groups across five seasons, working with outside linebackers, defensive lone, fullbacks, tight ends and wide receivers, where three earned All-shore Conference accolades.

Spagnola is a 2017 graduate of Montclair State University with a bachelor of arts degree in English.
