The Canastota Rotary Club is seeking nominations for its “Roses to the Living” award to honor one or two community members who have exhibited the quality of “service above self” through their volunteer work. The rotary club is especially interested in honoring an individual or individuals who went above and beyond to help others during the pandemic. If you know of such an individual(s), please send a letter of nomination to Liz Metzger: 102 W. Center Street, Canastota, NY 13032, or lmetzger@midyork.org. Be sure to state the name of your nominee and their volunteer activity(ies). The Canastota Rotary Club Board of Trustees will make the selection(s), and a dinner will be held in May at Theodore’s to honor the recipient(s). The deadline for nominations is March 31, 2022.
“Harriet” at MVCC: The movie “Harriet” will be shown as part of the Fact and Film Series at 6p.m. in Schafer Theater, Wilcox Hall, at MVCC’S Utica Campus. Dr. Todd Marshall, MVCC Chief Equity & Inclusion Officer/cdo, will provide an introduction to the film, which tells the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. The cost to attend is $5 for the general public, $2for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students. This event is part of a series of events at MVCC in celebration of Women’s History Month this March. Free Lymphedema Screening:
The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) Outpatient Lymphedema Clinic is holding free screenings throughout the month of March in honor of Lymphedema Awareness Month. Lymphedema is the build-up of fluid in soft body tissues when the lymph system is damaged or blocked. Lymphedema Awareness Month is a time to spread information about this disorder, to reach those suffering from symptoms, and to provide recourses to those who are currently or recently diagnosed. Typical symptoms of lymphedema include swelling, heaviness or tightness, reoccurring infections, and restricted range of motion. It is most common in limbs including fingers and toes but may occur in the trunk, chest, back, neck, or shoulders. Those interested in a free screening should call the MVHS Outpatient Lymphedema Rehabilitation Center at (315) 624-4632, Monday through Friday from 7a.m. to 4p.m. to set up a free screening appointment during the month of March.

Women of the Civil War: In honor of Women’s History Month, join Historian Cheryl Pula to learn about contributions made by women during the Civil War including their role as doctors, nurses, spies, and even combat soldiers! Cheryl will also include a discussion of Oneida County’s own Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the first female U.S. Army surgeon and only female Medal of Honor recipient. Pancake Dinner: Breakfast is what’s for dinner at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where plenty of pancakes —complete with blueberries or chocolate chips if desired—will be available at Its Takeout Pancake Dinner on Tuesday, March 29. The menu will also include sausage, bacon, syrup, and fruit. Dinners will be available for $10from 4- 7p.m. or until sold out. Proceeds will benefit Lutheran World Relief’s work in Ukraine and St. Peter’s cross garden. Women of Cazenovia; At 7:00 p.m., Cazenovia Heritage will host a special presentation entitled “Women of Cazenovia and Madison County” by , Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz at the First Presbyterian Church Meeting House in Cazenovia. Urtz will talk about some of the most prominent women in the history of Madison County and Cazenovia and how they impacted their local communities, NYS, and the United States. Women in Construction: Empowered Pathways is offering the opportunity for women to learn about job opportunities and the trades on March 30 from 12:30- 2:00 p.m. at 201Lafayette Street, Utica NY 13502. This free event, sponsored by W.I.C. (Women in Construction) will feature a panel of women who have enjoyed successful careers in the trades and will include laborers, carpenters, pipefitters/plumbers, and operators. The panel members, all experts in their respective fields, will share their journey to success and offer insight for women considering this occupation. The event is hybrid and can be attended in person or virtually. The event will include lunch for those attending in person, and the panel will address questions from attendees. Indoor Farmers’ Market: Parry’s, Hamilton’s Modern Day General Store, will host its Annual Indoor Winter Farmers’ Market from 10a.m. — 1p.m. The market has vendors offering locally produced produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, honey & maple, eggs, granola, biscotti, soaps, art & more. In addition, Parry’s sells local NY food, coffee, jewelry, prints, and hand-crafted items. Free Concert: G. Roberts Kolb returns for one last performance as he conducts the Hamilton College and Community Masterworks Chorale and Symphoria in Johannes Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, “a requiem for humankind” at 7:30pm in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center, Hamilton College. Yard Cleanup: The Village of Oneida Castle will be holding its annual spring yard clean-up from April 25-April 29, 2022. Residents must place all yard debris at curbside and may include limbs up to 4inches in diameter. All leaves must be bagged to be removed. This will be the only pick-up until Fall.

Adult Easter Egg Hunt: Must be 21+ to participate. It is an evening of fun at the Kallet Theater in Oneida while supporting Jessica’s Heroes Foundation Inc. Live music, games, food, and drinks. First drink is included in the ticket price. The doors open at 6:45p.m. and the hunt begins at 7p.m. Jessica’s Heroes team will place colorful eggs filled with prizes or “zonks” around the Kallet. Budget Meeting: The Canastota Public Library Board of Trustees will hold an informational meeting about the fiscal year 2022-2023Budget on Thursday, April 21at 6:30p.m. The budget will remain the same as last year at $334,822. According to library officials, pursuant to New York State Education Law #259, the library has a perpetual levy until the budget amount is changed. The budget hearing will be held in the Carnegie Room located on the 2nd floor of the library and questions will be answered at that time.
