Police: Man shouted slur, hit pair with van

Dania Beach police say a Lake Worth man rammed his van into two African-Americans who were attempting to save a parking space for their family.

According to the police report, before hitting the 41-year-old man and 67-yearold woman Saturday morni n g , D o n a l d L e e H i c k s shouted, “(Expletive) you (slurs), don’t you see what’s on the front of my truck?” Hicks was referring to a Confederat­e flag.

H i c k s , 3 8 , f a c e s t w o charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He re mai n s i n t h e B roward County Jail on $40,000 bond, according to court records.

Hicks thought he had found a parking space on Dania Beach, police said, but the man and woman were standing in it and explained that they were saving it for their family. They told police that Hicks became upset, shouted expletives and then rammed them. Both sought medical attention for knee injuries, according to the report.

Hicks has an arrest record for violent crimes in Palm Beach and Broward counties including battery on a firefighte­r, hitting a police dog and battery.
