The abuse started with comments about his sexual orientation. The 36-year-old man’s cellmate at South Bay Correctional Facility would tell him he wasn’t bisexual — he must be “tri-sexual,” for he’d “try anything,” as the derogatory term goes.

The physical abuse started New Year’s Eve 2007 when Anthony Moore ripped off his cellmate’s blanket and boxers. It was the first of more than 80 times Moore would rape him, the man told Palm Beach County sheriff ’s deputies.

The man, who is not identified in a sheriff ’s office report, detailed the abuse to deputies in March 2007 after a particularly bad beating left him in Glades Central Hospital — now Lakeside Medical Center — with what turned out to be a permanent “cauliflower ear,” caused by repeated trauma.

He will remain in the jail until his next court appearance Dec. 12, a judge ordered during a status check Monday. Jail records show Moore is from Raiford, a town with fewer than 200 residents per the 2000 census, in Union County in North Florida.

In 2007, Moore was 10 years into a life sentence for an armed robbery conviction he picked up in Brevard County in 1997. The then-35-year-old was a “bad boy” who had been in trouble with corrections officers many times, he told deputies.

Raping his cellmate, though, was an absurd allegation, Moore said. He spent most of the day working in the kitchen, he said, and hardly spoke to his cellmate.

Other inmates told deputies they suspected “Patch” — Moore’s nickname derived from the patch he wears where his right eye used to be — was raping his cellmate. The man had become increasingly reserved, the inmates told deputies, since moving in with Moore. He ate meals in his cell and refused to answer questions about the bruises coloring his body.
