Police: Suspect in shooting owed on football betting
Man gambled $1,500 on football games, police say.
Anthony Mattys is $1,500 in debt from gambling on football games to the man police say he is accused of shooting, and trying to kill, in Palm Beach Gardens on Monday night.
Mattys, 20, was arrested Wednesday afternoon by West Palm Beach police on attempted homicide and weapon offense charges, jail records show. Mattys has addresses in Palm Beach Gardens and Pompano Beach, records show.
A 20-year-old man was driving south on Alternate A1A near Gardens Parkway, northwest of the Downtown at the Gardens shopping center, shortly before 11 p.m. Monday. A white BMW pulled up on the left side of the car, the man told police, and he immediately recognized Matt ys as the man with a gun in the passenger seat of the BMW.
Matt ys fired five or six rounds at the man, according to the police report.
Police found four 9 mm shell casings on Alternate A1A and a single bullet hole on the driver’s door of the man’s car. The interior center console was smeared with blood and also had a hole in it, according to the police report.
The man was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to the police report.
Mattys and the man would place bets by phone or in person on football games, the man told police. Mattys racked up $1,500 in debt to the man and wouldn’t return any of his calls.
Mattys is on probation for carrying a concealed weapon, so a judge revoked his bond on that case, meaning Mattys will be held in the Palm Beach County Jail until his next court appearance. A judge set a $120,000 bond for the attempted murder charge.
